Every Notion page can have its own icon. This icon can be an emoji, a custom upload, or any external icon.
By default, if a page has an icon, it automatically becomes the favicon for that page in the browser tab.
If a page has no icon, the main website favicon is used instead.
Why Disable the Page Icon as Favicon
You may want the page icon visible in the page layout but not used outside the page.
Common reasons:
- You used a personal profile photo or sensitive image
- You want the entire site to use one consistent favicon
- The page icon only makes sense inside the UI and not as branding
- You want a cleaner browsing experience for portfolio or landing pages
How to Disable It
To stop a Notion page icon from showing as the favicon:
- 1.a.i.Open the page in Notion
- 2.b.ii.Find the Category property
- 3.c.iii.Add this value:
Use Default Favicon - 4.d.iv.Save and publish
After adding this category, the site will ignore the page icon and use the default website favicon.
Example Scenarios
| Page | Keep Icon as Favicon | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Homepage | No | Use default favicon for branding |
| Personal Portfolio Page | No | Avoid showing private photos in browser tabs |
| Blog Posts | Optional | Depends on preference |
| Documentation Pages | Optional | Usually fine either way |
If later you want the page icon to become the favicon again, simply remove the Use Default Favicon category.
